Cape Coral, Florida was mostly a sandy peninsula in the 1950’s. It was dotted with scrub and well known by hunters and fishermen who traveled the single dirt road in search of adventure.
By the early 1960’s, two land speculators had purchased the property with a vision and a belief that the property’s location on the Gulf Coast, excellent climate and endless possibilities for waterfront living would blossom into paradise. They began the task of platting the community and digging more than 400 miles of canals that now wind their way through the 114 square miles that make up the City of Cape Coral. Even those early developers, the Rosen brothers, may not have envisioned the city as it appears today.
In August of 1970, the City of Cape Coral was incorporated. From that point on, to present day, the city’s population has continued to grow. With a population well over 140,000 residents, it is one of the fastest growing areas in Florida. Geographically, Cape Coral is the second largest city in the state of Florida and is the eleventh largest city in population.
One of the main features of Cape Coral is the thousands of waterfront residential properties located on the 400 miles of canals. Many of these canals provide access to Matlacha Pass, Charlotte Harbor, and the Gulf of Mexico making it one of the most desirable communities on the Gulf Coast.
Cape Coral is a large peninsula bordered by the Caloosahatchee River on the east and Matlacha Pass on the west. The northwest Cape Coral neighborhoods served by the NWNA are bordered on the west by a pristine, environmentally important state wildlife preserve which includes a forest of native Red Mangrove trees. They also encompass an extensive, fully navigable and connected waterway system with Gulf access. In addition, a major city owned golf course is located in the northwest making this area an extremely diverse and attractive residential community
