PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE - September 2024 - Here Comes the Sun

Dear Neighbors,
The smile’s returning to our faces, it seems like years since it’s been here”Quoting the late, great, George Harrison who gave us this inspiring song (Here Comes the Sun) as a member of The Beetles.

The Rise of NW Cape- Updates on:

  • Island Pearl Development Project
The rise of the Northwest is upon us.   The work has begun, shovels in hand, boots on the ground.  The demolition of the five (5) condemned homes purchased to expand the Island Pearl development project across the street from Publix shopping center on the corner of Burnt Store Road South and SW Pine Island Road has just been leveled and removed.   Refer to our Development Review Committee reports on our website to learn more about the Island Pearl project.

  • Sirenia Vista Park Tree Beautification
A large delivery of canopy trees arrived at Sirenia Vista Park on 8/23/24.  Installation and planting of all the trees delivered have been completed.  The trees were part of an initial grant project for park beautification.  We can expect another allotment of trees or a second phase in the near future. A pleasant surprise and nice to see the investment in the NW Cape.

  • City Moving Forward to Complete NW Parks Funded by GO-Bond

  • Tropicana Park-
Final permitting for Tropicana Park has been issued.  Tropicana Park (TP) is coming!  We can expect a fast-track timeline for the bidding process to help make up for lost time.  The final permit was issued by the US Army Corps after the release of our “Streetscapes Survey” to our members.  This project moves forward fulfilling the Go-Bond funding commitment.

  • Crystal Lake Park-
Kevin Black, Parks Chairman- NWNA reported back from a tour of Crystal Lake Park.   Construction is well underway, and the contractor is working along the lake perimeter and making progress toward completion next year.   Please visit this park and provide some comments on the progress.    If you look into the water on a bright sunny day, you will understand why the name stuck.   The boat ramp on the west side of the elevated “look-out” berm in the canal will bring access to the Northwest Spreader for boaters, kayakers, and paddle boards.

  • Festival Park-
Groundbreaking Ceremony was held on July 26th, 2024.   Many of our members NWNA Board Members converged on the property to celebrate the ribbon cutting with residents and our elected officials.   This was another win.   NWNA was established in 2004, Festival Park planning began right around the same time.   The construction of the amphitheater will take place following Phase 1 site preparation.

NORTH 3- UEP STREETSCAPE PLANNING SURVEY-

  •  Street Reconstruction Design Plan Presentation-
We would like to thank you all for taking the time to complete the initial surveys on streetscape planning.  This was such an important exercise, paramount to shaping the reconstruction of our neighborhoods and main roads during the North 3 UEP project.

Cathy Eybs, NWNA Treasurer, and I shared the results of our member survey in person at City Hall.  Special thanks to
Michael Ilczyszyn- City Manager and staff for taking the time to collaborate with NWNA leaders to capture “our pulse”.  There are times when projects are initiated and moved forward without taking the time to gather a clear understanding from those who will be affected the most.  So happy to say that is not the case here.   Kudos to the city staff!  Please visit our website to review the “Survey Results” page if you have not done so.

You may have noticed an army of
purple and grey pickup trucks working in the streets and properties off Tropicana Parkway and heading north into to North 3 UEP zone.   The trucks belong to McKim & Creed.  They were awarded the contract to complete the survey and design plan to reconstruct our roadways.  This design includes bridge enhancements and or removal along Old Burnt Store Road and the median development plans for Old Burnt Store Road, Tropicana, Yucatan, and Gulfstream Parkways.   These options and choices were outlined in our survey questionnaire completed by over 400 members.

Expanded Center Median “Concept” from Streetscapes Planning Survey

McKim & Creed has completed their initial design of our streets.   The design options have been submitted to the City Manager’s Office.  NWNA will reveal McKim & Creed’s- North 3 UEP Streetscape concepts at our upcoming General Membership Meeting on October 15th.    Please arrive early to secure a seat.   We have requested the city manager to assist us with the presentation of the concept designs and answer questions.   Upon the conclusion of our meeting, a final survey (What Do You Want) will be forwarded to tabulate our final choices.  Our collective voice and vision will be captured to transform our neighborhoods for many years to come.
